ART THERAPY
When we use art as a therapeutic tool it is about the process of making art and not about the product. There is no right and no wrong. The use of colour plays a big role and need to be emphasized.
We use art and colours to help the participant get personally involved and use as much of their senses as possible. We use art as a communication medium. They do not have to talk if they don’t want to. The movement of colouring in makes them calm and give them a chance to focus on their problems. It also gives them something that they can control. Many of them feel that they have lost control. They need to connect with their inner being, and we are there to help them do that.
In severe trauma cases the victim is not able to talk about the trauma. Through the use of colour and drawing it is then possible to express some of the underlying emotions.
Keeping the environment friendly but quiet while busy with their drawings is essential. Relaxing music can be helpful.
MUSIC THERAPY
The drumming sessions is not as difficult as you think. We keep it very elementary, and when you start with it, you will probably be the one who enjoys it the most. It is a beautiful ice breaker, to begin with, and it helps the participants to focus. It also gives them a chance to get rid of aggression. They need to listen to each other and must co-operate together. It gives them a feeling of belonging because they need each other to make a successful piece of music.
We want to teach them to listen to the following:
•The rhythm through echo playing. You play, they play.
•You can let them feel their heartbeat to understand and feel the beat. It is imperative that you keep the beat like a metronome. If you are not good with it, practice or find someone in the group that can do it. I would recommend practising to keep a constant beat before presenting the course. Another exercise to help a sense of rhythm is hopping a ball and catching it rhythmically. Then hop the ball on another service for one count and two hops on another service. You get 1, 2, 3, 1,2,3, 1,2,3. They can also use their feet and make “1” louder than the other “2,3”. If they can do that nicely in unison, you can start playing a different rhythm on a drum with the same beat.
•We want to help them to improve their communication skills, and drumming is an excellent way to teach them to listen to intonation,
-hard/soft – volume,
-High/low – different pitch
-faster/ slower- tempo,
-Sad/happy – emotion.
-Create their rhythm – be creative. (Just keep within the beat)
They need the above communication skills. Many times, the problem with anger lies with a person that is not a good listener. Communication is more than words. It includes body language, tone of the voice and the way somebody express him/herself. When you are tuned in to listen carefully, you are more aware of the world around you, and mindfulness will be more effortless.
